Today is our full day here in Salado. We are staying in the historic Stagecoach Inn. We love it. It is old but cool too. They are slowly renovating all the rooms. We were on the waiting list for their one and only suite for 2 years before we got. Now we reserve it for the next year when we check out!
Off to shop til we drop! Here is the schedule we have worked out over the years.
- We start at 10 AM at Magnolia's, Classics on Main, Christy's and Side by Side. We skip breakfast and go to Browning's Courtyard Cafe right after 11 AM to beat the crowd. They have wonderful sandwiches and soups. And their cranberry apple pie is greatness.
- After lunch we head across Main Street to Southern Comforts and Mud Pies Pottery. Southern Comforts is a little mall-type place with different sellers. Mud Pies is pottery but we don't buy any pottery; we buy their FUDGE. Kate gets rocky road and get pecan praline. Good stuff.
- By now Cita is ready for a rest so we drop her back at the room and out by ourselves. Kate and I head down to Horsefeathers for great decorating ideas and home goodies. Then we head to Stamp Salado. They have wonderful stamps. We usually get a Christmas stamp here to make our own Christmas cards. This year we are asking Casey to make them for us! Can't wait to see them!
- Fletcher's books is our next stop. He has a MILLION books, both old and new. Plus he has great old antiques and odds and ends.
- We made the rounds of antique stores where Kate found an old Samsonite suitcase. You know one of those old heavy, hard-sided one? She has wanted one forever to use for slumber parties. See is so excited. She is going to decorate it with pictures and stickers. She is her mother's daughter.
- Before we headed back to the inn to check on Cita and rest a bit; we stopped at Rosansky's. I love, love, love this store. So many pretty, one-of-a-kind things.
- Round two we headed to Bird in Hand to check out there wonderful sweaters, scarves and art. And finally we stopped at Strawberry Patch. They have every dip, sauce, jelly, jam and condiment under the sun. And you can taste them all!
- We headed back to the room for rest and relaxation! We unpacked and played with all our goodies and watched "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe. So funny!
There is some sadness to this story. The economy has hit Salado. We noticed that 4 of our favorite spots have gone out of business, one restaurant has changed its name and one has also gone under. In the 6 years we have been going to Salado parking has been a huge issue. This year we had no problem finding a spot. I am sick that we are losing mom and pop stores and restuarants. It is history lost; not just food and shopping. It is livelihood gone and dreams shattered.
